What to Pack for a Girls Trip to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of those destinations that doesn't require much. The weather is warm, the vibe is casual, and nobody is judging your outfit at a rooftop bar in Old San Juan. And yet, there's an art to packing for a girls trip that balances looking good, staying comfortable, and not spending half the trip digging through an overstuffed bag.
My rule: carry-on only. A long weekend in Puerto Rico; even four days of cobblestones, beach clubs, cocktail bars, and a rainforest, does not require a checked bag. Here's exactly what to bring.

The Philosophy First
Warm weather packing can be harder than cold weather packing, because the temptation is to bring every swimsuit, every sundress, and every pair of sandals you own "just in case." Puerto Rico rewards a light bag and a flexible wardrobe. When you're not dragging luggage through cobblestone streets or waiting at baggage claim after a long travel day, the whole trip gets easier.
The goal: pieces that work in multiple contexts. A swimsuit cover-up that doubles as a beach-to-lunch dress. A linen set that works for dinner and a market morning. Sandals that can handle cobblestones and a rooftop.

Clothing
Swimsuits — bring two You'll be in the water, at pool bars, and possibly sweating through a rainforest hike before hitting the waterfalls. Two swimsuits means one is always dry. A one-piece and a bikini gives you the most flexibility — one for active days, one for lounging.
Cover-ups — one or two A lightweight cover-up that you'd actually wear to lunch is worth its weight in the bag. Think something you can throw over a swimsuit, walk into a restaurant in, and not feel underdressed. A linen button-down shirt also works here and doubles as an evening layer if the AC gets aggressive indoors.
Dresses — two to three Old San Juan is a dress destination. The colorful streets, the rooftop bars, the candlelit dinner spots. Dresses earn their place in the bag. Pack two or three that can be dressed up or down depending on the activity. Lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics are your best friend; linen, cotton gauze, or jersey.
A nice going-out outfit If you're doing a cocktail class, a nice dinner, or hitting La Placita for the night, you'll want one outfit that feels a step above the rest. One elevated option like a silk slip dress, a linen matching set, whatever makes you feel good.
Shorts and a casual top For the rainforest, the market, the morning coffee walk. One pair of lightweight shorts and a comfortable top that you don't mind getting sweaty or muddy covers the active daytime moments.
A lightweight layer The restaurants and Ubers in Puerto Rico can be aggressively air conditioned. A thin cardigan or linen shirt takes up almost no space and saves you every time.
Underwear and a strapless bra Pack enough underwear for each day plus one extra. A strapless or convertible bra handles most of the dress situations without you having to think about it.
Shoes
Comfortable sandals that handle cobblestones This is the most important footwear decision you'll make. Old San Juan's cobblestone streets are beautiful and uneven, and the wrong sandals will ruin a night out faster than anything else. Look for a sandal with a low block heel or a flat with real grip. Something stylish enough for dinner but stable enough for a long night of walking. Pro tip -break them in before you go.
A casual flat or sneaker For a rainforest hike, the market morning, the Bacardí tour. Something you don't mind getting dusty or damp.
Mix and match basics to build your aesthetic
Beach and Day Bag Essentials
A packable tote You'll use this constantly — as a beach bag, a market bag, a day bag when you don't want your full purse. A lightweight tote that folds into nothing earns its spot in the carry-on every time.
A small crossbody bag For nights out when you just need your phone and a lip gloss. Keeps your hands free and your essentials secure on a busy night.
Reef-safe sunscreen — and a lot of it Puerto Rico requires it by law in some areas, and beyond that it's just the right call. Pack more than you think you need, you'll be in the sun constantly and reapplication is non-negotiable. A mineral SPF for your face and a spray or lotion for your body covers all the bases.
After-sun lotion Even with good sunscreen, you'll want this at the end of the day. Your skin will thank you, and it makes the evening routine feel a little more luxurious.
A good pair of sunglasses Polarized lenses for the water days. Pack them in a hard case so they survive the bag.
Dry shampoo Humidity is real in Puerto Rico. A travel-size dry shampoo between beach and dinner is a genuine lifesaver.
Breezy linen sets are a lifesaver
The Girls Trip Extras
A good book or your Kindle For the pool hours, the flight, the slow mornings with coffee. Leave space in the trip for actual stillness.
Your favorite rollerball perfume Small luxury, big mood. A familiar scent in a new place is oddly grounding, and a travel-size rollerball takes up almost no room.
Travel-size versions of your actual skincare Not the drugstore substitutes — your actual products in travel sizes.
A reusable water bottle Stay hydrated. The heat and the cocktails are both working against you, and having a water bottle you'll actually use makes a difference.
Gear and Practicalities
A portable charger — Long nights out mean you’ll be burning through your battery
Waterproof phone pouch — For the snorkel tours, boat cruises, beach, and anywhere near the ocean
Travel-size laundry sheets — If you're gone four or more days and want to re-wear anything, these are compact and effective
Medications and basics — OTC pain reliever and any prescriptions
Puerto Rico doesn't need much from you. Show up, pack light, and let the island do the rest.
