Capo La Gala: The Amalfi Coast Hotel That Redefines Romance
Between the trips I plan for clients and the ones Jared and I take ourselves, there are just a few hotels that earn a permanent spot on my must-book list. Capo La Gala did it in two days. We stopped there for a short stretch of a much longer Italy trip, and it's the property I still bring up first when someone asks where to go for a couples getaway on the Amalfi Coast.

The Arrival: A Private Transfer to the Cliffside
The transfer from the train station was already waiting upon our arrival, and our driver had Spice Girls playing on the radio. It was a good start right there. After a short 10min, winding ride, we deboarded and were handed a lemon granita and a bottle of water, sipping both as we looked out over the cliff's edge at rock formations so massive they freckled the entire sea line. We hadn't checked in yet and the trip already felt like it had set a higher expectation.
The Rooms: A Private Heated Plunge Pool

Capo La Gala's top room categories are designed around one idea: privacy with a view. Ours came with a private heated plunge pool built right onto the terrace, and we used it more than any other amenity on the property, an evening dip after dinner, a quick wake-up dunk before breakfast, didn't matter, we found a reason every few hours. That first night we ordered room service twice and never left our space, marveling at how personal it felt. At one point we barely left the pool long enough to catch the Bucks beating the Bulls on Italian TV, drinks in hand, watching the light change over the water instead of the screen. That's the kind of evening this hotel is built for.
An Open-Air Gym, If You Want It
Tucked into the property is a small open-air workout space, equipped with just enough machines and free weights to get a real session in if that's what you're after. It would be impossible to find something to complain about while you’re working out with that view! Jared and I both liked the idea of it in theory. In practice, this wasn't a workout trip for us, it was a relax-and-unwind one, and the gym stayed exactly as untouched as we wanted it to.

The Aquarium Spa
The spa lives up to its name: emerald-green pools, coral sculptures on the walls, treatment rooms painted with seahorses. We worked through all eleven water relaxation stations over the course of a morning, some built for massage, some for mobility, others aimed at reducing inflammation or getting circulation moving. Even though we had to reserve our time, nothing about it felt rushed.
Day Two: Sunset by the Pool
On our second day we ordered drinks from the Sea Tavern's poolside bar. Cold, perfectly delicious, and exactly what we wanted after a morning at the spa. We sipped them poolside and watched the sun go down over the water, in no hurry to be anywhere else. We made our way back to the room afterward and fell asleep with the patio doors open, just the sound of the water next to us.

The Food
The breakfast buffet is served on a veranda overlooking the coast, and it's worth waking up early for. Flaky pastries, dense morning cakes, tomatoes that tasted like they'd been picked that morning, a full spread of fresh and aged cheeses, and every yogurt parfait topping you could want. For dinner, the property's Michelin-starred restaurant, Maxi, is the main event.
We did the tasting menu at Maxi and I'm just going to say it, it was expensive, and I would do it again tomorrow. Every course showed up looking like a tiny piece of art, with flavors I didn’t know existed. Did I have a small internal moment when the bill came? Yes. But some meals earn their price tag, and this one did it course by course. If you're debating whether to book it, stop debating. Book it.

Capo La Gala might just be the Amalfi Coast’s best kept secret. It's the ideal, romantic getaway, built around private plunge pool terraces instead of big group amenities, and set on a stretch of coast quiet enough that you hear the water just about everywhere on the property.
